The Frontenac grapes were harvested in 2012 and the associated vinification process at their production plant in Minden resulted in a great 2012 vintage Frontenac wine that was submitted for judging at the 2014 international wine competition held in Rochester, New York.
In their 14th year of judging fine wines, 75 judges, all with national and international credentials, from multiple markets in Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the United States and other wine regions of the world judged 3,756 wines. With ongoing vineyard and production facilities operations, Tahoe Ridge Winery, who participated in the development of the Nevada Wine and Grape Growing Industry in 1990, is Nevada’s largest and longest continually owned and operated wine producing and grape growing company. This year will mark Tahoe Ridge’s 21st harvest of grapes from Nevada vineyards and 24 years as a partner in Nevada’s wine and grape growing industry.
As a result of years of work, inter-specific wine grape varieties are flourishing here in Northern Nevada. Interspecific wine grapes were developed by researchers at Cornell University and the University of Minnesota. Tahoe Ridge began work with interspecific wine grapes in 1999 and has participated in the planting of 15,000 of these vines in the Carson, Smith, Washoe and Mason Valley areas of Northern Nevada.
Tahoe Ridge Winery harvested the first commercial interspecific wine grapes from the Buffalo Creek Vineyard located in Gardnerville, Nevada in 2008. At that time Buffalo Creek Vineyard was owned and operated by David and Susan Semas. The vineyard, which was planted in 2006 and is approximately 8 acres in size, consists of two red interspecific wine grape varieties, St. Croix and Frontenac, and two white interspecific wine grape varieties, La Crosse and Brianna.
